Meredith College, located in Raleigh, North Carolina (USA) is an independent private women’s college focused on liberal arts undergraduate education with several coeducational graduate programs. Chartered in 1891 as the Baptist Female University, the college became independent in 1997. In 2011 the College enrolled over 1980 students. Meredith College’s history and character introduced several unique elements to campus sustainability work, including the College’s heritage as a Baptist institution, the presence of only female undergraduate students, and its location in the southeastern United States. As a women’s institution, women’s leadership and issues often framed campus conversation and culture. And, like many colleges and universities in the Southeast, Meredith College faced the unique challenge of embracing its Southern heritage and customs while working toward campus change, including curriculum development related to sustainability. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.
