Tóm tắt

Liberal arts education currently plays a relatively minor role within the Russian system of higher education. Indeed, a Google search under “liberal education?? (liberalnoe obrazovnie) in Russia reveals relatively few hits, the most prominent of which is a Russian translation of one of the author’s articles, “What a Liberal Arts Education Is and Is Not.?? The thin footprint of liberal arts education in Russia, however, does not mean that it plays no role or that it has no future. Indeed, given the multiple transitions and challenges that the Russian system of higher education is facing, there are many reasons to believe that it will play an increasingly prominent role over the next decade. In this chapter, we explore the presence and prospects of liberal arts education in Russia. For our purposes, a modern liberal arts education can be defined as a system of higher education designed to foster in students the desire and capacity to learn, think critically, and communicate proficiently, and to prepare them to function as engaged citizens. It is distinguished by a flexible curriculum that allows for student choice and demands breadth, as well as depth, of study, and by a student-centered pedagogy that is interactive and requires students to engage directly with critical texts within and outside of the classroom. © 2012 Taylor & Francis.
