Tóm tắt

"Teacher educators who are culturally competent understand and value the role of diversity in today's societies, including schools and classrooms" (Prater and Devereauz, 2009, p. 19). This presentation addresses culturally responsive praxis by showcasing an intercultural activity. To assist teacher candidates enrolled in a Diverse Learners course with developing an understanding of and appreciation for the linguistically diverse students they will encounter in their future classrooms, teacher candidates "interviewed" international students. The majority of the teacher candidates were monolingual, with English as their native language, and had little to no experience with persons whose first language was not English. With cooperation from faculty in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Health and Life Sciences, the international students were interviewed by the teacher candidates. The presentation will share the steps taken to carry out the collaborative activity including the interview formats and questionnaire. It will conclude with a summary of the teacher candidates' perceived benefits due to their participation in the intercultural experience. © Common Ground, Lorie Cook-Benjamin.
