Tóm tắt

Valid foundational educational concepts and values that were researched, developed, and championed by earlier educational pioneers over a 300 year time span now run the risk of being marginalised, ignored or even forgotten if the move into eLearning curriculum and platform development disregards the history of generalist liberal education and pedagogy. It is argued that ELearning underpinnings utilised in adult education and professional training are substantially different from the pedagogical foundations required for the inclusion of eLearning in the liberal education of adolescents within the existing model of K to 12 Canadian schools. The integration of ELearning into adult education and training is fostering a serious shift toward the application of adult learning theory across a range of eLearning products. When essentially adult eLearning platforms have been made to fit over what have been teacher moderated classroom based curriculums, problems have arisen. Without detailed planning, collaboration, and synchronicity with existing delivery modes the benefits that eLearning can offer to motivated adult learners in terms of flexible schedules, access to web resources, collaborative on-line discussion groups etc can hinder the learning, contextualising and understanding of unfocused adolescents. This paper is intended to provide a lens through which the reader can look to visualise what eLearning could become if several giants that influenced the development of North American public education were alive and active in the ELearning field today. Jean Jacques Rousseau advocated that children should study and savour nature to understand the world. Johann Pestalozzi felt passionately that children should learn through activity and through interaction with nature and everyday things. Friedrich Froebel developed a complete Kindergarten method that included activities, teaching aids, (Gifts) and teacher preparation. Maria Montessori expounded that children should be able to direct their own learning. John Dewey was one of the original promoters of Instrumentalism, Pragmatism, and Democracy in Education. Frederick Bonser & Lois Mossman's work was foundational as it saw Industrial Arts/Education as a Social Study.
