The liberal arts and global citizenship: Fostering intercultural engagement through integrative experiences and structured reflection

The question of how study abroad fosters global citizenship is ideally posed within the context of American liberal arts colleges. Not only are study abroad participation rates (in terms of the percentage of graduates) higher among liberal arts colleges than for other types of institutions (Bhandari & Chow, 2008), the liberal arts have a long tradition of preparing graduates for citizenship. Increasingly, liberal arts colleges are adding experiential opportunities to their curriculum acknowledging that a whole-person education necessarily takes place within a whole-world context. While not universal among liberal arts colleges, these institutions are increasing their attention to the development of global citizens in their mission statements’ regarding expected educational outcomes. © 2009 Taylor & Francis.
