This chapter provides a view on how neoliberalism has impacted on aspects of the cultural and intellectual life of the university. It gives a brief overview of the concepts of liberal education and neoliberalism, before examining the impact of neoliberal reform on higher education. A liberal educational philosophy is encapsulated by the post-enlightenment understanding that knowledge can be its own end, and that the university can be a site of pure reason with free enquiry for both teachers and students. It empowers individuals through knowledge and the development of critical skills and values. Higher education institutions were seen through a new lens of “enterprise”, and would primarily serve the economy with students taking on a new identity as customers purchasing a product in a new service industry. Knowledge is increasingly becoming a privatized commodity, and there are systems of education that have embraced this notion by situating institutions directly in the market. © 2009 Taylor and Francis.
