Catholic educational leaders faced a number of dilemmas in the postwar years as they implemented the Thomas Reforms in their rapidly expanding secondary school system. This paper highlights tensions between those who wished to preserve Catholic autonomy and the values of a liberal education and those who saw advantages in the new common core curriculum and access to the state-mandated examination system. Fears of the loss of Catholic autonomy are expressed in the context of a state-controlled core curriculum based on secular values. Yet Catholic educational leaders saw the advantages of a public examination system and the benefits of gaining access to the expertise of the inspectorate. The new School Certificate examination came to be seen as a way for Catholic pupils to gain access to a good job, to further qualifications, and a pathway towards the successful integration of working-class Catholics into New Zealand society.
