A reference librarian and the chair of a department of English planned and implemented a learning community, a project designed to advance information literacy. This article describes the background, implementation, and results of incorporating a third academic discipline (fine arts) to pioneer a collaborative project whose purpose, in part, was to dismantle independent academic silos and meet on the common ground of liberal learning. Current academic scholarship suggests that neither the one-shot library tour nor the artificially assigned research paper wins points with students or does much to advance the information literacy skills and attitudes necessary for lifelong learning. © 2004 by The Haworth Press, Inc.
