A social issues-related economics course is more crucial than ever for baccalaureate social work students. Understanding the economic system and its relationship to poverty, health care, crime, and other social issues can empower BSW students to more effectively assist and advocate for their clients. This article (1) examines the rationale for including an economics “topics” course in the BSW curriculum, (2) suggests a relevant economics course and describes several content areas within such a course that specifically relate to the educational needs of BSW students, and (3) illustrates ways in which an undergraduate social welfare course utilizes and benefits from students' increased knowledge of economics. © 2005 by The Haworth Press, Inc.
