Modern languages in the American college curriculum: The coming of age

This article traces the path taken by modern languages into the American college/university curriculum. It begins with the Colonial Era and concludes with the World War I Era. Some of the arguments for and against the teaching of modern languages are identified, as well as the unique relationship enjoyed between modern languages and a liberal arts education.
