The role of scholarship in physical education in the liberal arts college is discussed, placing it within the context of Ernest Boyer's (1990) landmark publication, Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities for the Professoriate. Boyer forces physical educators to consider the problems and issues that confront the academy and the role of physical education in it. Pondering the specific issue of scholarship in physical education is especially appropriate in light of the debates that have recently raged over the place and priority of scholarship in the academy. Particular attention is paid to the role of scholarship in the liberal arts institutions that house physical education. © 1995 The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
