Survival Skills Training during Freshman Orientation: Its Role in College Adjustment

One hundred thirty-seven students - 72 program and 65 nonprogram participants - took part in a longitudinal study investigating the effect of an outdoor orientation program for freshmen at a small, selective liberal arts college in the Northeast. Subjects received the Environmental Preference Questionnaire and a variety of other instruments. Results indicated that the orientation program had a significant impact on friendship formation that lasted over the course of college. Recommendations are made regarding student involvement in orientation programs.
