This article reports on the results of a survey of 164 assistant library directors (ADs) at 137 comprehensive and liberal arts institutions. Findings indicate that while professional credentials, method of appointment, and career expectations were fairly consistent among the ADs, their position responsibilities varied greatly-largely in response to the directors' preferences. © 1993.
