Tóm tắt

Changing technology - hardware and software - creates change in instructional delivery systems. As a result, we in academic computing services must look more closely at the issues surrounding user support of students and faculty in non-traditional and distance learning programs. Because the vast majority of our user population at the College of St. Catherine is female, we must also take into account gender issues as they relate to technology and the instructional setting. Research suggests the following special needs of women as non-traditional and distance learners: (a) opportunities for frequent contact & networking with other women using technology; (b) direct, personal encouragement to counter well-conditioned fears many women have of technology; (c) hands-on experience using technology to create documents & tools that are personally meaningful; (d) training materials that value personal experiences, that are free of cultural/gender bias, communication style that is more dialogic, exploratory, antihierarchical; (e) clear expectations for what is considered "mastery;" as well as (f) mechanisms for giving feedback to the institution to help students feel connected & empowered. Special user support considerations based on our experiences include: (a) access to and training on communications software, Gopher, BBS, e- mail, vax notes conferencing as well as spreadsheets, graphics, statistics and other non-word processing programs, (b) opportunities for cooperative learning, (c) issues related to physical limitations of older adult learners, (d) role models in staffing, as well as (e) willingness to address difficult issues such as sexism versus freedom of speech. Expanding the campus computer community for us means incorporating the special needs of non-traditional and distance learners in our strategic plans, participating in Internet discussions related to our user population, as well as designing and developing documentation and training experiences based on what we know about how our users approach technology and the learning process which surrounds it. © 1993 ACM.
