Whether green political thought is distinct from traditional political positions, or is a variety of socialism, anarchism or liberalism, is very much a vexed question. For recent work, see Keekok Lee's Social Philosophy and Ecological Scarcity, (1989); Robin Attfield's The Ethics of Environmental Concern, debate between different interpretations of Judseo-Christian thought can be found in John Passmore's Mans Responsibility for Nature, second edition, (1980); especially Liberal Education and the Nature of Knowledge and The Forms of Knowledge Revisited, See the essays in Paul Hirst, Knowledge and the Curriculum, London, (1974); See Rudolf Carnap, Empiricism, Semantics and Ontologya', reprinted in Meaning and Necessity, enlarged edition Chicago University Press, (1956); There is a general difficulty in finding terminology to describe pervasive underlying themes in the thought of a culture. Francis Bacon, in his Novum Organon wrote about idols', but his terminology, like the terminology of ideologya, (1983); For further reading See the same authors Darwinism Defended: A Guide to the Evolution Controversies, For an account of a modern revival of this issue see Michael Ruse, A Philosopher at the monkey triala, (1982); Calabresi G., Melamed A.D., Macauley H., Yandle B., Environmental Use and the Market, Property Rules, (1977); (1986); Although there is a long tradition associated with the view that ethical considerations have a peculiarly compelling character, this has come under scrutiny from recent theorists. A helpful study is Bernard Williams, Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy, London, (1985); Pearce D., Markandya A., Barbier E., Blueprint for a Green Economy, description and critique of such a process see Mark Sagoff, The Economy of The Earth, (1989); Johnson E., Regan T., Earthbound, Treating the Dirt: Environmental Ethics and Moral Theorya, 6, (1984); Baxter F., VanDeVeer D., Pierce C., People, People or Penguins', (1986); This is clear in the case of the essays by Paul Hirst already cited; There is also a separate, but significant, (1989); They also overgeneralize. There are many routes to personal development, and it can be argued that the route favoured by theorists of liberal education is one among others; Dewey had a special reason for commending environmental studies as fundamental at all levels of schooling, for this fitted in with his ideal of unity in the sciences: The unity of all the sciences is found in geography It is his continual shelter and protection, the raw material of all his activities, and the home to whose humanizing and idealizing all his achievement returns; Although the terminology of real and notional derives from John Henry Newman; Some British universities are now moving towards offering such provision. Programmes in human ecology are well-established elsewhere in Europe though still only in a handful of universities; See, for one example, Israel Scheffler, Philosophical Models of Teaching', in Reason and Teaching, London, (1973); This paper is an expanded version of an address given at a seminar entitled 295 Education for Environmental Competence at Airthrey Castle, Stirling, (1990)
