Geography has a relatively modest role in adult education: many geographers would argue unjustifiably so in view of its potential contribution to the liberal education of adults. Adult education courses in geography focus on traditional areas like the physical basis of the landscape and the development of the human landscape but more courses could be run in these and other areas. There are problems of both demand and supply: the public image of the subject limits demand; and too few geographers offer courses. Individual geographers, geography departments and professional associations all have a part to play in promoting the subject. -Author
