The changing structure and function of technology in the modern world has major implications for professional engineering education. A renewed emphasis on the central role of creative design in the curriculum is required, incorporating greater attention to contextual factors (social, political, environmental, etc.) along with scientific and technical considerations. Dalhousie University, in association with the Technical University of Nova Scotia, offers a rich variety of paths leading to an accredited engineering degree - based upon combinations of distinct curriculum units (engineering common-core, liberal arts major, natural science major, and engineering disciplinary). New ideas and approaches concerning the common-core curriculum are being explored along with devlopment of curriculum paths which provide additional options for combining engineering with studies in liberal arts or natural science disciplines. © 1991 IEEE.
