A study was conducted to compare the breadth of the education received by engineering students to that received by liberal arts students. It was decided to restrict the study to schools that offer both engineering and liberal arts, and to compare the students within the same university. The schools included in this study are believed by the authors to constitute a representative sample of universities within the United States. The term breadth refers to studies totally outside the field of the student. For engineering majors, corses in liberal arts (humanities and social sciences) are meant. For liberal arts students, any courses involving math, science or technology are meant. The results indicate that as a general rule engineers receive a broader, more general education than liberal arts majors in the United States
