The author discusses the relative impact of 3/2 programs within the total engineering education enterprise. The 3/2 engineering program takes a student through three years of liberal arts education with a strong mathematics and science concentration, followed by two years at an engineering school, culminating in the receipt of a B. A. degree from the first institution and a B. S. from the second. The program is also called the Binary Plan, the Dual Degree Program, or the Combined Plan. The discussion considers the current status of 3/2 programs (with emphasis on experience of DePauw University), the character and record of 3/2 engineering programs, the role of liberal arts in the training of engineers, and problems and alternatives to 3/2 programs.
