Two recently published reports have implications for higher education. One, published by the Carnegie Foundation, is College: the Undergraduate Experience in America (Boyer 1986). The other, published by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), is To Secure the Blessings of Liberty (National Commission on the Role and Future of State Colleges and Universities 1986). The Carnegie Foundation report call for colleges and universities to address the conflict between careerism and the liberal arts. The preoccupation of students with degree programmes that appear to be preparation for highly paid jobs is of concern. A significant core of common knowledge provided in the tradition of a liberal education is lacking in a majority of college majors. © 1989 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
