the personality studies of Librarians have deplored the passive and submissive nature predominant among librarians and inappropriate to the demands of modern librarianship. The present study was based on the assumption, derived from library literature, that although assertiveness is a necessary attribute for librarians, the profession seems to attract unassertive people. The search for students with assertive personalities, therefore, ought to be one of the goals of library education. This study sought to determine the degree to which beginning library school students differ in their assertive abilities from their counterparts in law and liberal arts schools. The investigation was undertaken at Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, in 1983. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken to compare the assertion levels of incoming library school students with those of their counterparts. An assertion instrument was constructed from the Wolpe-Lazarus and Lawrence Assertive Inventories. Frequencies and percentages (for demographics) and a one-way analysis of variance were computed with the data. The results indicated no significant difference between the assertion levels of the three student groups. This may suggest that little or no psychological preparation takes place prior to the students' entry into their professional programs in Nigeria.
