We suggest that the teaching of translation should be given an increased importance in language-study curricular revisions. In this country, translation never enjoyed the role it traditionally performed in European countries. This may be blamed, nationally on chauvinistic aspects of the Melting Pot spirit, and academically on some ban mistakenly attributed to audiolingual pedagogy. Current changes in the US world image and in the field of applied linguistics could eliminate these objections. The teaching of translation is desirable because it develops a very usable language skill. It can, moreover, make the student aware of cultural differences more intensely than any other language activity. Eventually, it can help in the study of literary criticism as a natural way to perform text "deconstruction". We conclude in proposing a re-evaluation of translation as a realistic langauge task, that could help promote cultural and liberal education interests and play a decisive part in international-study programs. © 1985.
