Ought social work to be taught in a liberal arts college? The author's answer to this question is an overwhelming Yes!if if is taught as a liberal art and not as a prevocational technical specialization. This paper is a plea for literacy and intuition, for a combination of intuitive insight and objective knowledge in scientific research. It is the author's contention that the study of literature and painting can encourage students to view life in a more complex and subtle way than will result from the study of case histories alone. © 1967, Oxford University Press.
