This study was undertaken to ascertain whether those selecting trustees for Protestant and nonsectarian Pennsylvania liberal arts colleges have heeded the recommendations made by students of collegiate government. A questionnaire" which delved into the nature, composition, and functions of boards of trustees, was used to collect the data. The study demonstrated that the suggestions of scholars of higher education have not been accepted and that the control of the colleges rested with what might be termed the conservative elements in our society. On the basis of the results of this investigation and a review of the literature, the following recommendations are offered for consideration: reduce the prevailing large size of boards; limit the number of consecutive years of service and establish a mandatory retirement age; seat more women, more younger persons, more trustees representing the lower status occupational groups, and more non-Protestants on the boards. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
