Author's summary.— The author warns against a onesided emphasis on linguistic drill on the college level. English orientation lectures should supplement the linguistic training in order to provide thought?provoking subject matter even at a stage when the student is not yet able to master mature foreign texts in the original. For it is not only linguistic drill which prepares for the mastery of relevant texts, but also interest in significant subject matter which stimulates the desire to conquer linguistic difficulties. 1946 The Modern Language Journal
