Teacher behavior description scales, modeled upon Hemphill's (2) leader behavior description scales, have been prepared and administered to 119 male students of a Liberal Arts College. The behavior of seventy different male college teachers, randomly designated, was described. Factorial analysis of the resulting correlations between the nine scales has given four relatively independent factors or “dimensions” of teacher behavior. These have been tentatively designated as; I, Friendly democratic behavior; II, Communication behavior; III, Systematic, organization behavior; and IV, Academic emphasis. Comparisons have been drawn between these factors and some of the factors of teacher-behavior identified by Ryans and Wandt (5) for secondary school teachers, and between these factors and Hemphill's (2) factors of leader behavior. There is sufficient similarity with the Ryans and Wandt data to indicate that major dimensions of teacher behavior can be identified with some consistency. The remarkable similarity of the present data to those of Hemphill suggest that we have, perhaps, isolated some of the basic dimensions of social relationships; at least of those relationships involving status differences. © 1955, Sage Publications.
